Being academic

In the introduction of my book1, I wrote:

“to be academic is to be conscious of what you know and how you know it to be so.”

A few people have picked up on this and asked me to elaborate.

Being conscious of what you know is to be self-aware. This encourages self-reflection and, crucially, awareness of what you do not know.

Being conscious of how you know something to be so is to understand the evidence and assumptions that underpin your knowledge. It is a safeguard against unfounded assumption, unconscious bias, being out of date, and being just plain wrong.
